Have you caught a coworker or friend saying, “I’m tired!”
Or has your gym buddy recently said to you, “I’m so sore!”
Or have you caught yourself saying in the morning, “I can’t get up, I’m so exhausted!”
Flashback to my middle school basketball practices. Our coach ran us good! I remember whenever I was spent from running, I would hunch over with my hands on my knees. Coach would immediately shout to stand up. “Don’t show you are tired, even if you are. Your opponent will notice it.” This created a habit so by High School, during practice my new teammates wondered if I was EVER tired. I may have been as tired as the other girls; however I was good at not showing it. Eventually, I became good at telling myself I wasn’t tired after sprinting up and down the court; and it worked.
As a result, my words became my reality.
As a result, my words became my reality.
I started thinking, why do we say these ‘weakness phrases’ out loud? Are we seeking pity? Or recognition that we accomplished something?
After a tough workout, we tend to update our audience on how tired, sore, or depleted we are. This brings up a possible reframing question: Is there a way we can rephrase our statements to still receive the social acknowledgments we are seeking?
Why don’t we report how strong we are for going the extra mile? Or how accomplished we feel after a tough cycle class?
Think back....
Think about that middle school kid that just finished sprinting and is walking back tall – not with her hands on her knees. If she can convince herself that she is not tired, so can the grown-up in the mirror.
Vocalize your strengths, not your momentary weaknesses. Wake up and say, “I’m ready for the day!” Walk tall out of that intense workout and say, “We did it!” Lastly, tell your coworker, “We sure put in the time…almost done!”
Your positive words become positive attitude which become positive outcomes. Your words become your reality. With such power, make those words count.
Imagine how you can impact your workout routines with positive words.
