What are your staples? Why have them? How do we create them?
We all know what to eat (in general) but do we know how to make eating the right stuff easy, convenient and dare I say… delicious? Staple foods are so personal – they are specific to your tastes, your lifestyle and to the amount of TIME you have. Most importantly, these foods or drinks pop up multiple times in a week in our diets. This can either cause a big problem or a big opportunity.
"My Insurance Policy Drink"
I have an obsession with green smoothies, so much so that I refer to it as my insurance policy drink. Due to all things “life” that get in the way every day I can’t always commit to being 100% mindful about what I eat. My green smoothie is my “insurance policy” that I will eat fruits and veggies every day without anything bizarre added and without spending my life savings at a juice/smoothie bar.
We’ll use the example of a person who drinks OJ with breakfast every morning. What you see below is just a guideline – feel free to adjust along the way however you like – just keep making the incremental changes every few days or weeks, the long game is what’s important.
How to Make
Starting Phase 1: 8oz OJ
Grab your blender and lets create that big opportunity!
Phase 2: 6oz OJ, 2oz cucumber
Phase 3: 6oz OJ, 3oz cucumber and 1/4C packed spinach (spinach is far less flavorful than kale but if you are up for it go for the kale as well) + water to bring it all together to your desired thin/thickness.
Phase 4: 4oz OJ, 4oz cucumber, 1/2C packed spinach, 3oz frozen mango + water to bring it together.
Phase 5: 2oz OJ, 4oz cucumber, 1/2C or more of packed spinach, 3oz frozen mango + water to bring it together
Phase 6: NO OJ, 4oz cucumber, 1/2C or more packed spinach, 3oz frozen mango + water to bring it together
SERVE CHILLED! (No one likes to drink a warm salad…)
Alternatives
Don’t like mango? Use your favorite fruit instead. The idea is to treat yourself with the sweet we all crave but in a natural way.

To make greens really disappear into your drink you need a good blender. You by no means need a Vitamix, but a NutriBullet can do the job beautifully. The NutriBullet Rx 1700-Watt Blender by Magic Bullet is my #1 kitchen tool. If you can afford the $179.99 purchase price it is one of the best healthy kitchen investments you can make.
